SANDRA JEMAL - Director - founded LIAD in 1969. She was born in Washington D.C., raised in NY, attended Queens College and received an “Honorary Alumni” from Dowling College for her ‘exemplary contributions to the performing arts.’ She received her professional ballet training with Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Additional ballet studies were with Jacques D’Ambosie  (ABT), Melissa Hayden (NYCB), and Karl Shook (Harlem Ballet). Her studies in modern and jazz were with such greats as Martha Graham, Matt Mattox, Luigi, Peter Gennaro, and Gwen Verdon. Tap with Charles Kelly, Henry LeTang, and Mercedes Ellington. She is a ‘life’ member of Dance Educators of America (where she also served on the “Board Of Directors”), and Dance Masters of America.

            She is currently an active coordinator & President of the Huntington Arts Councils Consortium of Dance, as well as a major contributor of the annual “Celebration of Dance” and “Summer Arts Festival.” She has choreographed for High Schools, Universities, Summer Stock, taught master classes at SUNY Stony Brook, at Arts Council Conventions, & has judged Dance Competitions.

            Presently, Sandra is teaching & choreographing for the multi talented high score Competition Dancers at the Academy. Her award winning choreography has won her students the title of “Miss & Mr. Dance” at regional & national competitions as well as, Overall high scoring awards for Group performances such as, “Big Spender” (accepted to compete for World Title in “The World Competition” in Germany (2000), “Sole Survivor” (1999), “Walk for Beauty” (2000), a tribute to Breast Cancer Survivors) Presented by the Baldwin family, “Sunscreen” (2001) recipient of Dance X-Plosions Highest Overall Score at Nationals, “Avatar” (2011) winner of the “Federation of Dance Award.” More of her latest recognized work thru 2016 includes “Proud to be an American”, “Lost”, “You Raise Me Up”, “Alien Nation”, Slum Dog Millionaire”, Mad World”, 2011 “Miss Dance with “Little Bird” & “Woman’s Work”, 2013 Mr. Dance “Wolfman,” 2014 Miss Dance “Haunted”, 2015 “Sweet Dreams” and 2016 First Place Teen Solo “All of Me” (Reghan T.) & “Fallen Angel” (Georgie W.) Sandra also received the 2016 X-Calibur Award for “Say Something, the Highest Scoring Teen Dance of the entire weekend. All in all her dancers have always been the recipients of esteemed high honors for “perfect scores”, “best technique”, & “best choreography”.

Her students have received scholarships from Dance Masters of America, Dance Educators of America, the Joffrey Ballet, Alvin Alley, & numerous Universities. Others have gone on to perform with touring groups, music videos, cruise ships and …. Broadway!
